Key Benefits for Producers

Designed to be Economical On a Small Scale
VHTL® is designed operate economically at much smaller scales, in facilities between 1,000 and 20,000 bpd. This is substantially smaller than the minimum economic scale for traditional stand-alone upgraders, which typically operate at scales of over 100,000 bpd. A key advantage of VHTL® is the shorter cracking residence time of a few seconds which results in a smaller equipment footprint and less costly facilities.

Key Benefits for Heavy Oil Producers
The plant can be located to upgrade the heavy oil on the oil field next to the source and offering many key benefits:

  • Self supplied with energy – using generated coke from the heavy oil as fuel
  • High volumetric yield greater than 90%
  • Low capital costs for customers through a full turnkey service solution being offered
  • Low energy consumption due to low process temperature
  • Lowers capital expenditure by up to 50% ($7,500 to $12,500 per installed bbl of upgrading capacity)
  • Lowers operating expenditure by between $1 and $5 per installed bbl by reducing cost of diluent and natural gas
  • Capacity can be increased or decreased over the lifetime of a project by utilising a modular approach
